When people have been in a long term relationship, they often own many items in common. Some of this may be real property such as a home or condominium. Vehicles are generally an important part of life, and a couple may have only one that they both use. There are also small items, not always of monetary value, the couple has acquired over time. Dividing these when the relationship ends is often difficult for both people as it signifies the end of their investment in building a life together.

Dividing up items acquired during a relationship can turn into a nightmare for some people, and they may leave things they truly cherish so they can avoid dealing with their partner. It is important to leave the relationship feeling there was a balanced distribution of assets and personal items.
